Craighall residents objecting two new bottle store applications

The Craighall Residents Association.

The Craighall Residents Association and many residents are objecting to the two bottle store applications corner of of Lancaster and Clarence Avenues because:

• Such businesses tend to attract litter and undesirable loiterers and are therefore unsuited to being in the heart of a residential area. The CRA has in the past received complaints about other bottle stores in the area, so this concern is based on hard evidence.

• With 11 liquor outlets within a 1km radius, there is no pressing need for more outlets.

• They are very concerned about the parking, traffic and pedestrian access implications at what is already a busy corner.

• Unwelcome /unchecked developments can blight a suburb forever – just ask residents in Melville and Parkhurst… Remember.
In the case of the Lancaster Village application, many residents have also commented on the unsightly appearance of the extension.

• They have many concerns about the planning process and have now taken this up to a higher level. They getting "gatvol" of the bending of the rules.

• It has taken a month to get the information they asked for from the Gauteng Liquor Board. Perseverance got us to the Chief Director’s office and they are at last seeing some action and an assurance that the Lancaster Village bottle store may not open for trading at this stage. They have been told that the Board will meet to discuss their case.

Petition: they thank everyone who has signed. They’ve been advised that the more signatures they get, the stronger their position so are extending the deadline until mid-July. So keep those forms coming.

Signed forms can be put in the post box of any CRA exec member or faxed to 011-325-7160 or e-mailed to Wendy McAllister at: wendym@creativecoms.co.za

Bottle store update

Regarding the proposed bottle store in Lancaster Village, CRA has heard from the Council’s Senior Professional Officer, Land Use Management, who wrote:

“The Land Use Management Department has established that a stop order was issued by the Building Inspector, but ignored by the builder.

Legal action is being taken by the City of Johannesburg as a matter of urgency.”

One consequence of this may be that the Gauteng Liquor Board could revoke the conditional licence previously granted. We’re working on getting further information and clarification.

There’s no doubt that the case will be further strengthened by the petition objecting to bottle stores in the heart of the suburb. They have about 700 signatures thus far but it does provide an opportunity for YOU to have YOUR say about what should happen in our suburbs. Don’t forget – you can download a form from the CRA web site: www.cra.org.za
